About the artist
self portrait, oil on copper, 2023
Jennifer Smay is an American artist striving to understand the complexities of the human condition through an exploration of balance between the natural world and the world of the mind.
Smay began drawing from life in her early teens. This early interest in capturing the figure from life has never wavered, and continues to be a recurring feature in her work. She does not limit herself to any medium but tends to favor oil and occasionally, egg tempera. Her works have been displayed in local, regional, and national exhibitions, museums, and hang in private collections across the United States.
‘There is nothing that conveys the complexities of the human condition as well as that of the figure and that nebulous balance found between the physical world and the world of the mind.’ J. Smay
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” Michelangelo
